What an AI assistant can realistically do for a sales team

AI is most useful when it prepares, summarizes, and organizes. Commercial ownership, exceptions, and customer relationships still need a person in charge.

Preparation work

An assistant can summarize notes, structure drafts, and turn scattered information into actions. That reduces preparation time, but the owner still needs to review context, accuracy, and tone.

  • Prepare a briefing before a call.
  • Turn approved notes into a follow-up draft.
  • Classify inquiries with defined categories.
  • Flag missing fields before updating a record.

Decisions it should not make alone

Exceptional discounts, contractual commitments, delivery promises, and sensitive data require rules and human approval. Automation should escalate uncertainty instead of hiding it.

Design the control before the prompt

Define which information the assistant may receive, what output it must produce, who reviews it, and what happens when confidence is low. A long instruction cannot replace permissions, accepted examples, change records, or a way to stop the workflow.

  • Use only the data required for the task.
  • Keep drafts separate from sent messages.
  • Preserve the source of important facts.
  • Log corrections to find repeated failure patterns.

Measure quality and cost per outcome

Compare a manual sample with an assisted one. Count total time, corrections, omissions, and outputs accepted without changes. Include both model cost and human review. A fast output that takes longer to verify is not an operational improvement.

  • Factual accuracy and correct use of context.
  • Share of outputs requiring correction.
  • Time from input to approved result.
  • Combined tool and supervision cost.

A safe way to begin

Choose a reversible task, use non-confidential information, define the expected output, and review every result. Run a limited test, group errors by type, and expand only when the output becomes consistent.

Example: preparing a follow-up

After a call, the owner records the need, objection, and next step. The assistant proposes a draft using only those fields; the person checks promises, dates, and tone before sending. If information is missing, the workflow returns the task instead of inventing an answer. This separation adds speed without handing the commercial decision to the model.
